Casting My Book – What writers do when they’re burned out

I’m burned out. I’ve been working twelve hour days and putting down near 6k words a day for more than a week. I’m on a deadline and it took me to the eleventh hour for the big idea to come to me.

I still have a long way to go, but at the moment I’m just drained.

So what do I do?

I’m mentally casting Memoirs of a Gigolo. If you’re a writer and you haven’t done this with your novel you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s like turning your words into a mental movie.

So who would I cast as who? A few of them are easy.

Oliver’s Parents. Who else? If anyone that’s read Memoirs can think of two better people than this pair of aging beauties to play Martina and James, I’d love to know what they think.

Oliver’s Grandparents. Equally easy to peg.
Renata and the Former Fiancee
The Rat Bastard. I could see Sting playing a guy that would stoop very low to protect his daughter.
Roland always leaves me torn. Do I like Clive? Do I like Christian? Oh to only have such a dilemma.

The Greshams
Sigrund Sorenson is one of my favorite minor characters. For her I would need someone really blond really cool really beautiful and really really Scandinavian. Who else but Vendela? I don’t know if she can act, but for this exercise in futility it doesn’t really matter does it?
If there is a younger and hotter Alexander Skarsgard please let me know. Do I need to say who I’d want that particular bit of hotness to play?
Last – but certainly not least and in no particular order –  The Actress, The Psychiatrist, The Doctor, Lionel, The Matchmaker, the Real Housewives of London, and The Esthetician

There are others. I have so many favorites for Oliver I’d never dare start to name them. Ditto for Olga. But I actually feel like getting back to work. This exercise in futility has helped me clear my head and get me back on track. I consider that time well wasted.
